One of the last sleepy fishing villages left 〰️

In Xcalak, at the southern edge of Mexico, fly fishing returns to something simple and wild. Miles of pristine flats hold permit, bonefish, and tarpon.

A striking piece of modern architecture—with a chef, barman, and room for just eight guests—it becomes your home after the water.

The Fishery

The waters surrounding Xcalak are among the most diverse saltwater fly fisheries in the Caribbean. Miles of turtle grass flats stretch along the coast, broken by mangrove lagoons, channels, and reef edges that create ideal habitat for bonefish, permit, and tarpon.

What makes Xcalak truly special is how quickly the fishing begins. Within minutes of leaving the dock you can be casting to rolling tarpon on the oceanside, and in fifteen minutes the boat can be poling bayside in pristine flats where bonefish and permit tail in shallow water. The proximity of these two habitats creates an incredibly efficient fishery—one where anglers spend more time fishing and less time running.

The nearby Mesoamerican Reef adds another layer of life to the system, supporting migratory tarpon and a wide range of species that move between reef, lagoon, and flat. It’s not uncommon to see bonefish, permit, and tarpon within the same stretch of water, creating legitimate opportunities for a Grand Slam in a single day.

Each day unfolds a little differently, shaped by tides, weather, and curiosity. The result is a dynamic fishery that rewards patience, observation, and thoughtful presentations.

The Lodge

The lodge combines striking modern architecture with the relaxed pace of village life, creating a space that feels both refined and completely at ease.

After a day on the flats, anglers return to a plunge pool, cold drinks from the bar, and dinners prepared by the house chef. With space for only eight guests at a time, the lodge quickly begins to feel less like a hotel and more like your own place by the sea — a comfortable base for a week of fishing, good food, and Caribbean evenings.
